In the "The 30-Day Alzheimer's Solution" book by Dr. Dean Sherzai and Dr. Ayesha Sherzai, they use the acronym NEURO for what it means to live a brain healthy lifestyle. The N in NEURO stands for nutrition. Today I want to talk a bit about what I learned about nutrition from this book.
So what is a brain healthy diet? It is a plant-based diet rich in nutrients and poor in saturated fats and processed foods. What I like about Dean and Ayesha is that they value scientific research. They do not take this lightly. They wrote this book based on research from multiple approaches such as cross-sectional data, prospective data, retrospective data, randomized clinical trials and comprehensive reviews. Based on their research, they have seven rules for eating a brain-healthy diet:
Eat a plant-based diet (and the NEURO 9 foods every day).
Avoid all foods that are high in saturated fats.
Avoid refined carbohydrates and sugar.
Reduce salt and season your food with herbs and spices.
Avoid processed foods.
Drink water.
Eat homemade meals.
Eating healthy, nutrient dense food is one the best things you can do for your brain!
"In fact, food has a much greater impact on the brain, because this 3-pound organ can consume more than 25 percent of the body's energy." ~The 30-Day Alzheimer's Solution
Following their nutrition advice will help you with sharper focus, disease prevention, stronger immune system, higher mental processing speeds, better memory, more creativity, greater productivity, better sleep, higher intelligence and overall happiness. Wow! Who would not want any of that?!
For me the challenge is going to be giving up the refined carbohydrates in the form of tortilla chips and sugar. I do love my chocolate! Although it won't be easy to say no to tortilla chips and chocolate, I plan to take it one day at a time starting today.
